Foods and beverages that you eat have a big impact on your health, and good nutrition is important for staying healthy throughout your life. Healthy eating patterns can include foods and beverages that reflect preferences, cultural traditions, and budgetary considerations. Healthy eating focuses on eating fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dairy and protein. Dairy recommendations include low-fat or fat free milk, lactose-free milk, and fortified soy beverages.
Most people in the United States should consumes foods high in fiber, calcium, vitamin D, and potassium, and avoid foods that are high in added sugar, saturated fat and sodium. Small, consistent changes over time can make a big difference in your overall eating habits.

- Make half your plate fruits and vegetables: focus on whole fruits and vary your vegetables.
- Make at least half of your grains whole grains.
