  • Million Hearts Learning Collaborative REL and SOGIE Data Collection and Utilization Strategies for Health Care Services

Implementing practical strategies to collect race, ethnicity, and language (REL) data, and sexual orientation, gender identity, and expression (SOGIE) data in healthcare have critical implications for the advancement of health equity. Electronic health records systems vary in the level of sophistication and capabilities to capture data in a way that facilitates data retrieval to help providers understand and utilize data to improve quality of care and health outcomes. This session will address topics such as:

  • Understanding the need for and implications of collecting, updating, and utilizing REL and SOGIE data.
  • Assessing the quality and completeness of REL and SOGIE data collection methods.
  • Understanding of the terminology and differentiators related to SOGIE.
  • Best practices in REL and SOGIE data collection.
  • Using cultural information and terminology to establish trusting clinical relationships and create safe, welcoming and inclusive healthcare environments for patients and their loved ones.
  • Concrete, actionable steps to addresses underlying cultural biases and provide inclusive and nondiscriminatory care for patients who represent cultural minorities or identify as LGBTQIA+.
